VAR's Effect on Every Premier League Club in 2024-25

Video Assistant Referee (VAR) has become a crucial part of the modern football landscape, and in the 2024-25 Premier League season, its influence has only grown. With countless decisions made or overturned based on VAR, each team has felt its presence in varying degrees. Some clubs have benefitted from overturns, while others have suffered.

As of August 26, 2024, seven total overturns have been made in the Premier League, with none being rejected. These decisions have led to two goals being allowed and four goals being disallowed. VAR has also awarded a penalty, which was successfully converted, while another penalty was overturned.

For Brighton, VAR has been kind, leading to a positive outcome. They’ve had three overturns, leading to disallowed goals for both themselves and their opponents, balancing their overall goal score to zero. In their match against Everton, Lewis Dunk’s alleged foul on Dominic Calvert-Lewin was reversed, and a last-minute goal by Yasin Ayari was disallowed for offside.

Manchester City saw their positive overturn in a game against Ipswich, where a penalty was awarded and converted by star forward Erling Haaland. Leicester City also benefitted when Wout Faes’ goal was allowed after an incorrect offside call was overturned.

However, not all teams have fared so well. Bournemouth has been particularly unlucky, with two disallowed goals in matches against Nottingham Forest and Newcastle, leaving them with a net score of -2 due to VAR decisions.

With the season still in its early stages, the impact of VAR will continue to play a significant role in determining the outcome of many Premier League matches. Fans will remain divided on its implementation, but there’s no denying that it’s here to stay.
