EFL Cup Update

Hello, folks. There were no giant killings in the Carabao Cup last night; David couldn’t slay Goliath on a random Tuesday in September.

Four Premier League teams move on to the next stage, with two of them - Chelsea and Manchester City - dispatching their lower-league opponents with relative ease. The Blues ran out 3-1 winners against Morecambe, while the Citizens crushed Burton Albion 4-0.

Aston Villa also made light work of their challenge, defeating Carlisle United 2-0 in a game that was more comfortable than the scoreline suggests. Leicester City were another team to progress, beating Rotherham United 3-1 on a night when they had to dig deep to secure victory.

There were no major upsets in the other ties either, with the Premier League teams dominating their lower-league opponents for large periods of the game. However, the margins were sometimes smaller than expected, and it was not all one-way traffic.

As we look ahead to the next round, it will be interesting to see which teams can use this competition as a chance to get some momentum behind them after a poor start to the Premier League season. For others, it is simply about getting through to the quarter-finals without too much fuss.

In terms of what to expect from the teams that have already made it to the fourth round, Chelsea will be looking to build on their good performance in midweek and get themselves back on track after a poor run of results.

Manchester City, meanwhile, will be hoping to use this competition as an opportunity to get some players more game time and experience before their Champions League campaign gets underway. Aston Villa will be looking to make it past the quarter-finals for the first time since 2015, while Leicester City will hope to continue their impressive cup form and make a deep run in the competition.

As we look ahead to the next round, it will be interesting to see how these teams respond to the challenges that lie ahead. Will they be able to keep their momentum going, or will they fall by the wayside? Only time will tell.
